It was declared a protected area in 1970. It is located 20 km from the city of Ruse and has an area of 3260 hectares. It covers the canyon of the Rusenski Lom River and its tributaries Cherni Lom Beli Lom and Malki (Mali) Lom between the villages of Ivanovo, Cherven, Svalenik, and Pisanets.
Amateur ornithologists can meet over 190 species of birds here, of which 110 species nest in the park. The most interesting are the rock-nesting ones - Egyptian vulture, golden eagle, bony eagle, etc. The symbol of the park is the black stork.
The park is inhabited by red deer, roe deer, wild boar, jackal wolf, fox, and 22 species of bats. Nine amphibians, three species of turtles, eight species of lizards, and seven species of snakes have been found in the valley. The river is inhabited by 22 species of fish.
The park is home to the rare Caucasian nettle, as well as the Balkan endemic Deacon's mullein - the only one found in Bulgaria. The protected species of forest anemones, snowdrops, spring forest flowers, and others are also widespread.
